Work At-Will Doctrine - Essay Example Given her instructive foundation, it is now a social and mentality issue more than learning issue. Likewise, allowed that she needed to perform and still didn't considerably following quite a while of preparing and backing, it is proper to converse with her about her exhibition (there may different variables why has learning issue, for example, individual issues) that in the event that she doesn't improve, she might be approached to leave the organization. A fairly late-creating custom, at that point, which pretty much replaces the old style custom of utilizing dedicatory epistles and which, in its beginnings, appears to be somewhat more run of the mill of works of thoughts than of verse or the novel.(Gà ©rard Genette, Paratexts: Thresholds of Interpretation. Cambridge University Press, 1997) Epigraphs in Theses and Dissertations On the off chance that your area of expertise or college permits epigraphs, you may remember a short one for expansion to or rather than a devotion. . . . Spot the epigraph 33% of the path down the page, either focused or treated as a square citation . . ... Try not to wall it in quotes. Give the source on another line, set flush straight and went before by an em run. Frequently the creators name alone is adequate, however you may likewise incorporate the title of the work and, on the off chance that it appears to be important, the date of the quotation.(Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, eighth ed. The University of Chicago Press, 2013) Epigraphic Strategies Having studied 700 years of scholarly epigraphs to assemble The Art of the Epigraph: How Great Books Begin, I found that the connections among books and their epigraphs and the epigraphs sources are as individual as the writers in question. All things considered, certain methodologies develop. It appears creators follow in any event one of three proclamations, and regularly each of the three at the same time: Be Brief: While the cutting edge epigraph advanced from the extensive preludes of early books like Don Quixote (1605) and Gullivers Travels (1726), numerous writers have embraced the toning it down would be ideal methodology. One of the most acclaimed epigraphs is a minor two words: Only interface. Consequently E.M. Forster declared the topic of Howards End (1910) while administering significant life exhortation. . . . Quickness intensifies truth and seals it in our recollections. Be Funny: Humor is as fundamental in writing for what it's worth throughout everyday life. Nobody comprehended this better than Vladimir Nabokov, who got a kick out of undercutting desires. He presented The Gift, gave in English in 1963, with this passage from a Russian language structure book: An oak is a tree. A rose is a blossom. A deer is a creature. A sparrow is a fowl. Russia is our mother country. Demise is inescapable. . Be Wise: Epigraphs offer to those of us who esteem a decent knowledge. In the one for her 2009 novel A Gate at the Stairs, Lorrie Moore proposes that her point is to analyze some difficult realities yet additionally to confer the intelligence to endure those certainties: All seats give equivalent survey of the universe (Museum Guide, Hayden Planetarium).(Rosemary Ahern, But First, a Few Choice Words. The Best Small Liberal Arts Colleges for Computer Science TKG
The Best Small Liberal Arts Colleges for Computer Science Computer science is one of the broadest and most relevant fields today. While most people think of schools such as MIT and Carnegie Mellon when computer science is mentioned, there are a number of small liberal arts schools with strong computer science programs. Nearly every discipline today is and/or can be impacted by computational thinking, and studying computer science at a liberal arts school that emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and communication skills is worth considering. Below youâll find a few of our favorites, and as always we do not rely on rankings to create our roundups. We looked for schools with unique offerings and special opportunities. Harvey Mudd: Harvey Mudd is a liberal arts college for scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. Their computer science program is small (the college has a total undergraduate enrollment of less than 900 students) but mighty. Every faculty member in the computer science department at Harvey Mudd has an active rese arch program that involves undergrads, and most of the research is funded by the National Science Foundation. Summer long research projects are held every year, and students apply by filling out an application and then meeting with professors and discussing their primary interests. And then there is the Computer Science Clinic, a collaborative capstone project done by seniors at HMC. Teams of 4-5 students explore a technical challenge, design a system to address it, and deliver a prototype. Swarthmore: Full disclosure: itâs very hard to get into Swarthmore. But if you do, youâll have access to their computer science department and you can also take courses at Bryn Mawr, Haverford, or UPenn. Within the CS department, youâll also have a team of student mentors (that are called ninjas!). Ninjas share their expertise in class, and also hold study sessions at night. We think this is pretty cool because while itâs certainly not impossible to schedule extra help with professors, standing blocks of time that are always available to students might be even better. Williams:CS course offerings at Williams range from introduction to computer science to operating systems, with a lot in between. Youâll obviously have to complete the required courses, but Williams also urges students to make course selections beyond the requirements. For example, if youâre interested in computer graphics, itâs suggested that you take art courses. If hardware issues are more your style, check out their physics department. There are also a few unique offerings such as video game appreciation and electronic textiles. Amherst:At Amherst, youâll find the Ginsburg fund for computer science and algorithmic thinking fellowship program. Ginsburg fellows assist faculty members by providing academic support to other students, do interdepartmental work and research, and collaborate with other fellows in data science and statistics. You can read more the research and work of past and cu rrent fellows here. Vassar:Perhaps more so than the rest of the colleges on our list, Vassar emphasizes the importance of studying computer science within the framework of a liberal arts education. To that end, computer science students at Vassar are involved with the Center for Collaborative Approach to Science, where there are research and collaborative lab work opportunities. Colgate:There are three computer science academic offerings at Colgate. They have a computer science major, a computer science and mathematics major, and a computer science minor. Outside of the classroom, there are a few student clubs and organizations that host workshops, hackathons, lectures, and networking opportunities. Pomona:Pomona is tiny, and hard to get into, but the school offers both a major and minor in the field of computer science. What makes Pomona stand out is the robust colloquium schedule. There are seminars held almost every week, during which students learn about research thatâs curr ently being done in the field and introduced to career options. Bowdoin:In addition to academic offerings that are similar to the rest of the schools on our list, Bowdoin also has research opportunities. But Bowdoin students are making moves, too. One student recently launched a club called Students of Color in Computer Science in response to a lack of diversity in the field, and a recipient of a fellowship just built a visual web tool that portrays the complexity of voting patterns and strategic behavior on capitol hill. Keep in mind that our list focuses on small liberal arts schools. We encourage you to use this information as a starting point for your own research. It can be overwhelming to compare programs because a lot of them are quite similar. The best way to go about it is to create a list of what specifics youâre looking for, and then find schools that fit the mold. If you need help figuring out where to apply, or if a liberal arts education is a good fit for you, contact us here.

Bentham Opposes ââ¬ËThree Strikes And Youââ¬â¢Re Outââ¬â¢ Laws. Pain
Bentham opposes ââ¬ËThree Strikes and Youââ¬â¢re Outââ¬â¢ laws. Pain and pleasure dictate what we should do and what is right and wrong. It is about maximizing the pleasure and minimizing the pain. ââ¬ËThree Strikes and Youââ¬â¢re Outââ¬â¢ laws does not bring pleasure to society when a person goes to jail for life for stealing a pizza or a small amount of marijuana. These acts are wrong, but they are not evil. The value of pain and pleasure is based on the intensity, the duration, the certainty or uncertainty, and its nearness or remoteness. For instance, the pain of a stolen pizza and a murder, the intensity of the pain is not the same, nor does it last as long (hours as oppose to a lifetime). More so, ââ¬Å"utility is meant the property of something whereby itâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Of course, the man hides his valuables and the burglar dies. If this situation is not a form of excessive punishment, then ââ¬ËThree Strikes and Youââ¬â¢re Outââ¬â¢ is not excessive. Even so, he would say ââ¬Å"fallibility, logically, has more to do with whether we should punish at all, or how harsh our harsher punishment should be, than whether our punishment should be scaled according to the gravity of the crimeâ⬠(Lawrence, 76). In addition, a very important factor would notice. In his Doomsday machine example, he made a point to inform us that the population would know about the machine and what it does. Alexander would say, ââ¬Å"Once the [criminal] have been warned (the notice principle), and because they have no right to [commit the crime] in the first place (the wrongful act principle), they have no right to demand proportional response if that is more costly in terms of other valuesâ⬠(Lawrence, 79). In the same scenario, he would not consider the laws unfair if there is prior notice and if it only reacts to wrongful acts. The law stipulates that anyone convicted of two prior felonies would get 25 to life in prison for any cr ime. First, the population is notified. Second, it has to do with wrongful acts. Overview of the Book Stigma by Erving Goffman
Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity is a book written by sociologistà Erving Goffman in 1963 about the idea of stigma and what it is like to be a stigmatized person. It is a look into the world of people considered abnormal by society. Stigmatized people are those that do not have full social acceptance and are constantly striving to adjust their social identities: physically deformed people, mental patients, drug addicts, prostitutes, etc. Goffman relies extensively on autobiographies and case studies to analyze stigmatized personsââ¬â¢ feelings about themselves and their relationships to ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠people. He looks at the variety of strategies that stigmatized individuals use to deal with the rejection of others and the complex images of themselves that they project to others. Three Types of Stigma In the first chapter of the book, Goffman identifies three types of stigma: stigma of character traits, physical stigma, and stigma of group identity. Stigma of character traits are: ââ¬Å"...blemishes of individual character perceived as weak will, domineering, or unnatural passions, treacherous and rigid beliefs, and dishonesty, these being inferred from a known record of, for example, mental disorder, imprisonment, addiction, alcoholism, homosexuality, unemployment, suicidal attempts, and radical political behavior.â⬠Physical stigma refers to physical deformities of the body, while stigma of group identity is a stigma that comes from being of a particular race, nation, religion, etc. These stigmas are transmitted through lineages and contaminate all members of a family. What all of these types of stigma have in common is that they each have the same sociological features: ââ¬Å"...an individual who might have been received easily in normal social intercourse possesses a trait that can obtrude itself upon attention and turn those of us whom he meets away from him, breaking the claim that his other attributes have on us.â⬠When Goffman refers to ââ¬Å"us,â⬠he is referring to the non-stigmatized, which he calls the ââ¬Å"normals.â⬠Stigma Responses Goffman discusses a number of responses that stigmatized people can take. For example, they could undergo plastic surgery, however, they still risk being exposed as someone who was formerly stigmatized. They can also make special efforts to compensate for their stigma, such as drawing attention to another area of the body or to an impressive skill. They can also use their stigma as an excuse for their lack of success, they can see it as a learning experience, or they can use it to criticize ââ¬Å"normals.â⬠Hiding, however, can lead to further isolation, depression, and anxiety and when they do go out in public, they can, in turn, feel more self-conscious and afraid to display anger or other negative emotions. Stigmatized individuals can also turn to other stigmatized people or sympathetic others for support and coping. They can form or join self-help groups, clubs, national associations, or other groups to feel a sense of belonging. They might also produce their own conferences or magazines to raise their morale. Stigma Symbols In chapter two of the book,à Goffman discusses the role of ââ¬Å"stigma symbols.â⬠Symbols are a part of information control; they are used to understand others. For example, a wedding ring is a symbol that shows others that someone is married. Stigma symbols are similar. Skin color is a stigma symbol, as is a hearing aid, cane, shaved head, or wheelchair. Stigmatized people often use symbols as ââ¬Å"disidentifiersâ⬠in order to try to pass as a ââ¬Å"normal.â⬠For instance, if an illiterate person is wearing ââ¬Ëintellectualââ¬â¢ glasses, they might be trying to pass as a literate person; or, a homosexual person who tells ââ¬Ëqueer jokesââ¬â¢ might be trying to pass as a heterosexual person. These covering attempts, however, can also be problematic. If a stigmatized person tries to cover their stigma or pass as a ââ¬Å"normal,â⬠they have to avoid close relationships, and passing can often lead to self-contempt. They also need to constantly be alert and always checking their houses or bodies for signs of stigmatization. Rules for Handling Normals In chapter three of this book, Goffman discusses the rules that stigmatized people follow when handling ââ¬Å"normals.â⬠One must assume that ââ¬Å"normalsâ⬠are ignorant rather than malicious. No response is needed to snubs or insults, and the stigmatized should either ignore or patiently refute the offense and views behind it.The stigmatized should try to help reduce the tension by breaking the ice and using humor or even self-mockery.The stigmatized should treat ââ¬Å"normalsâ⬠as if they are honorary wise. The stigmatized should follow disclosure etiquette by using disability as a topic for serious conversation, for example. The stigmatized should use tactful pauses during conversations to allow recovery from shock over something that was said. The stigmatized should allow intrusive questions and agree to be helped. The stigmatized should see oneself as ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠in order to put ââ¬Å"normalsâ⬠at easy. Deviance In the final two chapters of the book, Goffman discusses the underlying social functions of stigmatization, such as social control,à as well as the implications that stigma has for theories of deviance. For instance, stigma and deviance can be functional and acceptable in society if it is within limits and boundaries.

Critical review of autobiography of life as son of A.A. Milne inspiration for boy who owned Winnie the Pooh in his fathers childrens books. Christopher Robin Milne died on April 20, 1996. He was the original Christopher Robin who owned the stuffed bear called Winnie-the-Pooh and his father A. A. Milne wrote some of the worlds most famous childrens books about his son and his toy animals. The obituaries for Christopher Milne stressed the fact that the attention this brought him from Pooh fans didnt always sit well with the real Christopher Robin (Transition 87). But in his autobiography, The Enchanted Places, which deals mainly with his childhood, Milne did not express any dislike for the books. The main problem that he had with his fame was that it was never really his own fame. The question that bothered him the most about the books was whether they had really been written for him, as his father sometimes claimed, or whether he was just the source of an idea that his father could use for his own purposes. Great Gatsby And Fitzgerald Dream Essays - The Great Gatsby
Great Gatsby And Fitzgerald Dream The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is set in 1922 in the New York City area. It is about the American Dream and those who attempt to reach its illusionary goals. Jay Gatsby acquires the wealth and the power of his dream but not the happiness. We have to wonder why F. Scott Fitzgerald would write such a book. Was it to reflect the society of the 1920's: where either you had money and the dream, or you were poor and lived amongst the ashes. You could have the chance of being like the phoenix and rising out of the ashes like the character Jay. This dream is different for different people. In The Great Gatsby, for Jay, the dream is that through wealth and power one can acquire happiness. Jay Gatsby, the central figure of the story is one character who longs for the past. Surprisingly, he devotes most of his adult life trying to recapture it, finally dying in its pursuit. In the past, Jay had a love affair with the affluent Daisy Buchannan. Knowing he could not marry her because of her social status, he leaves her to achive a comparable social status. Once he acquires this status, he moves near Daisy, and throws elaborate parties hoping, by chance, she might show up at one of them. When Daisy doesn't show up at the parties, Jay asks around to see if anyone knows her. Soon he meets Nick Carraway, a cousin of Daisy's, who agrees to arrange a meeting. Gatsby's personal dream symbolizes the larger American Dream which is available to everyone , the wealth, the status and the happiness. Tom Buchannan, Daisy's husband, realizes his world is falling apart when he is driving to New York with Nick and Jordan Baker the female golf pro. His wife Daisy, is driving with Jay in her car. Tom stops to get gas and Tom's mistress, Myrtle sees him. With jealous eyes she watches them leave thinking Jordan is Tom's wife. On the way back from New York, Daisy is driving Tom's car, Myrtle sees the car and thinks that it's Tom and she runs out in front of it. Daisy doesn't realize the woman she hit was Tom's mistress, as she continues to drive away in shock. Later in the story at the Plaza Hotel, Jay still believes Daisy loves him. He is so convinced of this that he takes the blame for Myrtle's death. Jay cannot accept that the past is gone. He is sure he can capture his dream with all his wealth. He believes he acted for a good beyond his personal interest and that should give him success. Gatsby doesn't rest until his American Dream is finally fulfilled. However, it never comes about and he ends up paying the ultimate price for it. Jay found his wealth and his power but not his ultimate happiness. The idea that money can buy everything is far off, no matter what you have you can never buy true friends or total happiness. The American Dream still holds true today. But one thing never changes: everyone desires something in life and everyone strives to get it, but as we all know, " you can't always get what you want". Gatsby is a prime example. I highly recommend this book as a great read. Quote " You can't always get what you want"

ITCs cigarette Business Essay Example
ITCs cigarette Business Essay Example ITCs cigarette Business Essay ITCs cigarette Business Essay High incidence of taxation continuously has been a deterrent to ITCs cigarette Business. Taxes amount to over 80% of the value added in the cigarette industry, hence making cigarettes increasingly unaffordable to the Indian tobacco consumer. There are about 200 million tobacco consumers in India, and of them, fewer than 14% can afford cigarettes, although cigarettes contributes 90% of total Central and State revenues generated from tobacco sector. Non-cigarette forms of tobacco consumption, constituting nearly 85% of tobacco consumption in the country, contribute barely 10% of Government revenues because of the difficulty of tax collection and the low tax yields that characterize this largely unorganized sector. There has been a prolonged punitive and discriminatory taxation regime at Central and State levels have made cigarettes unaffordable to the majority of tobacco consumers. Also, Non-cigarette forms of tobacco products are largely produced in the unorganized sector characterized by lower rates of tax and ineffective enforcement. As a result, there is a growing migration to lower value forms of tobacco consumption. Just to illustrate, in 2003, the effective excise duty on most tobacco products other than cigarettes is equivalent to about 12% of the net value of the product whereas on cigarettes this component is as high as 140%. Moreover in 2003, VAT was introduced on cigarettes already subject to a plethora of taxes. The export prospects were affected by the uncertainty and diminished market presence caused by the crop holidays in Andhra Pradesh. As a result, the export attractiveness of Indian tobaccos is caught up in a vicious cycle to the growing detriment of the tobacco farmers. Also, small base of domestic cigarette consumption discourages investment in RD and quality enhancement of tobacco varieties thereby sub-optimizing the export potential of tobacco. There was also threat from contraband trade of cigarettes aided with loopholes in the regulatory framework and lack of effective enforcement. In 2004-05, severe restrictions were imposed on the cigarettes industry with respect to advertisement, sale and consumption of tobacco products with the implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade, Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (COTPA). All these in totality made cigarette business less profitable and more challenging. As a result, ITC started diversifying into multiple businesses. While exploring new opportunities, for long term growth, ITC depended on its multiple strengths synergies that it could bring about from its existing businesses. We discuss few of such businesses in detail in the following sections. The mill at Bhadrachalam produces 240,000 TPY of papers and boards and has three board machines and two smaller paper machines. The mill produces paperboards for the packaging and graphics segments with a product range that includes Cyber XLPac (folding box boards), Pearl/Saphire Graphik (solid bleached boards) high value boards and the Ecoviron range of recycled boards. It also makes liquid packaging boards for Tetrapak in India. One of the big innovations at this mill has been the commissioning of an Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) fibre line. This is a state-of-the-art line which meets the effluent norms set by the Ministry of Environment and Forests of the Government of India and thus ties in with the Environment theme in its Triple Bottomline. The Tribeni Tissues unit was initially part of the Wiggins Teape Company, UK from 1961 to 1988. In 1992, it merged with ITC Ltd. The mill and its paper machines were refurbished with the latest technology. It has a capacity of 33,000 TPY with a product range that includes cigarette tissues, fine papers, packaging papers and specialties. The range from papers produced is quite diverse including Cigarette Tissues and Components, Laminating Base Tissue, Acid-Free and Anti-Rust Tissues, Low Grammage Printing Papers, Di cor Papers to Insulation Grade and Medical Grade Papers. The unit is ISO 9001:2000 version and ISO 14001 accredited. ITC has another paperboard facility at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu which was acquired from BILT Industrial Packaging Company in 2004. This mill manufactures Coated Duplex boards Greyback and Whiteback made with 100% recycled materials and has a single board machine with 90,000 TPY of capacity. The products are continuously monitored for quality using a Siemens DCS system and Measurex QCS system. Quality as in other ITC units is a big focus and the mill has continuously demonstrated quality having achieved ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications. The delivery of rolls and sheets is ensured by a modern Finishing House with short turnaround times. Eco Naturo and Eco Naturo-HS are the two grades of Coated Duplex Grey Back board made from this unit. For almost the first time in India, a customer has the option to buy a higher bulk and stiffness of Greyback Board (GD2 grade) for his carton requirements. The unit at Bollarum near Hyderabad produces 5000 TPY of Cast Coated Papers and Boards, 10,000 TPY of Poly Extrusion coated boards and 10000 TPY of C2S art boards and Ivory cards. It is the market leader in South Asia in carton boards and ranks second in turnover within the Indian paper industry. Most leading Fast Moving Consumer Goods Brands in India use paperboard manufactured at this location. Exports constitute about 20% of sales and cater to international markets in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, Australia, UAE, Turkey, China, Singapore, UK, Greece, Germany and USA. Casino taxes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Casino taxes - Essay Example Casino taxes The basic casino gaming tax laws which are to be followed by all states including Nevada and New Jersey are the following: Winnings from all types of gambling are taxable and should be declared as income on the tax return, while the losses from gambling are to be deducted as an itemized deduction for the spare time players, restricted to the amount of winnings declared. Players who are professional gamblers must hold a file as self-employed business using Schedule C. Schedule C is an Internal Revenue Service form used to file profits and losses by a company (What is Schedule C, 2011). The worth of comps received is considered as gaming winnings and are included in the total winnings. Though, the person is allowed to deduct the losses to counterbalance the income from the comps. The winnings and losses are reported only in the year of occurrence. Excessive losses are not to be carried forward or backward to balance winnings in other years. Married couples who file a joint return shou ld combine their winnings losses, and account only one figure for both. According to the instructions issued by IRS, lumping is unacceptable. Lumping is either reporting only one final win figure and no losses, or reporting nothing if the net value from gambling is a negative. A person must report total of the winning sessions individually from the total of the losing sessions. The Internal Revenue Service requires an accurate record to be maintained to substantiate ones wins and losses. The records must contain at least the following information: the date and type of personââ¬â¢s particular wager; the name of the gaming organization or establishment with its location and address; the names of the other people, if any, present with the player; the amount the person won or lost. A report containing wagering tickets or receipts; W-2Gs; credit card records such as cash advances; cancelled checks; receipts provided by the gambling establishment and bank withdrawals is also require by the IRS to substantiate a personââ¬â¢s diary. A person does not submit these records with return but will be needed if the person is to be audited. As casinos and card rooms are subjected to the money-laundering rules therefore they must report cumulative cash transactions of ten thousand dollars or more in one day to the IRS. They can also make out such reports for amounts as low as two thousand dollars if they are doubtful and apprehensive. Once a casino has a personââ¬â¢s SSN and ID on record, they may issue these Cash Transaction Reports (CTRs) without his/her knowledge. Though the basic rules of casino gaming taxes are almost the same for every state but there are some differences as well. The revenues generated from the taxes in Nevada are used by the local governments and state general fund. In New Jersey the casino revenues provide financial assistance to the disabled and elderly. (State Tax Systems: recreational gambling, 2010) Casino gaming taxes in Nevada: A licens e fee is imposed at both local and state level. The Fish by Elizabeth Bishop Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The Fish by Elizabeth Bishop - Research Paper Example Although the main character in the poem is a fish, the situations described therein are not only applicable to the fish itself but is reflective of the struggles of common human beings. Therefore, the discussions in this paper will be dealing with the literary devices used in the poem as well as their relations to the poet. Elizabeth Bishop clearly describes the fish in her poem and brings her readers to think about common things in life observed everyday as a way of bringing connections from the fish to the reader. She brings out common observances as a way of saying, ââ¬Å"This is not simply a talk about a fish but this is also about usâ⬠. First and foremost, the author calls the attention of her readers to the ââ¬Å"tremendous fishâ⬠that she caught by describing how the fish hung from her hook, looking ââ¬Å"battered and venerable and homelyâ⬠. In real life, there are so many people with such situations- people who have been through a lot of troubled times but b y overcoming, they have gained a respectable status. The word ââ¬Å"homelyâ⬠expresses the thought of the poet of this circumstance as a common predicament and not an extraordinary situation and therefore, makes a common ground for the fish and the reader. Early in life, Bishop experienced several troubles herself and was introduced to the words ââ¬Ëstrugglesââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëtrialsââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëtestsââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëgriefââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëdisappointmentsââ¬â¢ and many other difficulties even when she was still unable to understand words. While she was merely eight months old, Bishopsââ¬â¢ father died from a disease he has been suffering for six years. This became the start of her troubled life because although her mother was a respectable woman, she was greatly distressed with the death of her husband which led her to get in and out of the mental hospital for the rest of her life (harvardsquarelibrary.org, Miller). As a result, Bishop had a short-lived relationship with her mother because she eventually died when the poet was but five years old. Nevertheless, she tells of memories about her mother such as the boat ride they had when she was around three years old wherein one of the live swans bit her motherââ¬â¢s finger when she tried to give it some peanuts. On another occasion, she picked up a ââ¬Å"womanââ¬â¢s black cotton stockingâ⬠which represents an intimate clothing and she was reprimanded of her curiosity by her mother. As a result, she became indignant of her mother and did not have such a good relationship from then on (Miller). From the accounts above, it is clear that even at a young age, Bishop has been through tough times and she sees herself in the fish but as mentioned earlier, she also sees other peopleââ¬â¢s lives in the fish. She then describes the physical appearance of the fish, commenting on its skin. Bishop uses simile not only to give a vivid description but also to bring the reader from the setting wher e the speaker is fishing to the world beyond it where other people are living. Similes such as ââ¬Å"his brown skin hung like stripsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"like ancient wallpaperâ⬠and ââ¬Å"like full blown rosesâ⬠give color to the images presented and make the fish an interesting character contrary to what really happens in daily life. Such commonality and vivid descriptions come together as attractions to the reader to consider what the poet is saying. Sure

Maslowââ¬â¢s Hierarchy of Needs Essay Example for Free
Maslowââ¬â¢s Hierarchy of Needs Essay A good sales-person is one who possesses personality traits that is in their innate nature to interact with others. These are often difficult to teach but can be developed with time, depending upon the individualââ¬â¢s motivation to excel in their field of work. This forms the intrinsic motivation. However, the motivational tendencies of an individual sales-person alone are insufficient as it is also dependent upon extrinsic motivational factors. (Luke Ali 2011). It is a force that can spur or discourage an individual from achieving the fullest potential in any field. It can take the form of monetary or non-monetary benefits, which encompasses the extrinsic motivation of the sales-person (Luke Ali 2011). Knowing the fact that monetary incentives have been deeply entrenched as the basic method of reward for employees; it must not be assumed that relying on this method solely will be effective. Companies have to consider immaterial benefits to motivate its staffs. What is motivation? Motivation is to initiate action on a certain task. It is to expand a certain amount of effort on that particular task and to persist in expanding effort over a period of time. Therefore motivation is a driving force that pushes people to work, put in effort in their work and working harder than the rest. How to motivate your sales force to have great performance? Itââ¬â¢s not just about the paycheck. Effective incentive compensation management is based on an understanding of basic human motivationââ¬âon the importance of trust, self-esteem, social recognition and improved chances to fulfill oneââ¬â¢s potential (Bakosh 2007, 3). Leadership Many people assume salespeople are motivated by money, and while this is largely true, its absurd to think they are motivated only by money. Salespeople are still human and while commission bonuses and sales spiffs will probably remain an important part of most sales compensation plans, studies consistently show that financial incentives never have the same lasting impact as an employee who is passionate about his work and it is a simply not possible to be passionate about something that you think is inferior. Besides instilling natural passion into your sales team, a salesperson who truly believes in his product or service is far more likely to sell with integrity. Good teamwork is crucial to job satisfaction because it gives employees a sense of accomplishment when the objective is attained. Inspirational sales leaders are well aware that different individuals have different motivations and needs, and they vary their own style accordingly. An especially effective leader with consciously assesses each sales representativeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"ideal level of energyâ⬠, and creates productive ââ¬Å"stretchâ⬠for each person according to the level of tension at which each performs at his or her personal best. He inspires some representatives mostly through positive reinforcementââ¬âââ¬Å"you can do it, youââ¬â¢re the bestâ⬠ââ¬âand others mostly through constructive criticism, each according to their individual profit le and preference. Compensation Plans A well-designed compensation plan is crucial for the success of a company, and must not be overlooked. It has the ability to motivate or de-motivate an employee. In truth, it is valid to imply that, in this context, an effective plan can inspire the sales-person to generate more revenue for the success of a sales company .Hence, when designing the plan it involves the consideration of multi-factorial elements (Growth Process Group 2011). Every step has a purpose and needs to be taken into account. The sales behaviour goals are often misinterpreted by organisations, hence resulting in the failure to motivate their employees. Lastly, the design guidelines encompass the classification of the job and its entitled incentives (Growth Process Group 2011). Compensation Plans â⬠¢Salaries are fixed amounts per month or year for performing a role. â⬠¢Commission is a payment based on the value of sales achieved. This constantly motivates the sales-person especially since his income is strictly dependent on his sales. â⬠¢Salary-plus-commission plans offer an incentive above a basic salary that provides a high-degree of flexibility securing salary and profits but also surpass oneââ¬â¢s performance (Tokarev Sergey 2010). â⬠¢Bonuses is based on oneââ¬â¢s achievement and not working hard alone. It is the results that matters and bonuses should not be restricted to keep employees from producing results. (Lee Ann Obringer 2011) â⬠¢Long-term incentive plans like profit-sharing plan reward employee for their performance over a continued period of time. This helps retain, motivates employees and even improve their commitment. Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy needs Maslowââ¬â¢s Hierarchy of Needs is a motivational theory that illustrates that lower-needs need to first be satisfied before higher-needs can be pursued in a hierarchal sequence. Therefore, after a need is satisfied, it will cease to motivate an individual who will inevitably seek for the next higher-need. Each level requires different actions to meet these needs in order to effectively motivate. In relation to the compensation plans above, monetary benefits may only fulfil the lower needs for an individual. Ultimately, when these needs are achieved, itââ¬â¢s effectiveness in motivating individuals will gradually dwindle. Non-monetary benefits will then be necessary to satisfy the individualââ¬â¢s higher needs, in accordance to Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchical system. Only through this, can companies sustain long-term motivational effects for its employees. In relation to the compensation plans above, monetary benefits may only fulfil in the lower needs for an individual temporarily. Ultimately, when these needs are achieved, non-monetary benefits will take precedence to satisfy the individualââ¬â¢s higher needs, in accordance to Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchical system. Only through this, can it sustain long-term motivation effects. Yet, it is necessary to be weary that while Maslowââ¬â¢s theory has helped in the understanding of the application of compensation plans, applying this concept workplace can be tacky as different employees can be driven by different needs. Furthermore, there are insufficient evidences to substantiate the support of the hierarchy theory because its relevance to one job might not apply likewise to another (NetMBA 2010). A sales force specific hierarchy of motivational factors- Maslow hierarchy of motivation. By understanding how an integrated and holistic approach to motivation works the importance of trust, of self-esteem, of social recognition, of improved chances to fulfill oneââ¬â¢s potentialââ¬âtraditional incentive compensation management strategies can be rethought and implemented in ways that improve the performance of the sales force and help the entire company achieve high performance (Bakosh 2007, 3).

America Needs Tort Reform Essays -- How to Fix the Tort System
According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform, ââ¬Å"The tort system is truly broken and in bad need of repair.â⬠Tort cases are becoming an extremely common fight in the nationââ¬â¢s legal system. Since 1986, 38 of the 50 United States have adopted some sort of tort reform. However, with the many flaws of the tort system today, the suffering American economy will continue to fall behind if the American public does not insist on fighting for justice in the legal system. The governing bodies of these states must continue to seek reform and propose strategies to fix the corruption in the tort system. The legal system set up by the founding fathers will experience corruption in the negligence of these governing bodies. Tort law is a branch of civil law that establishes rights to a person when a damaging act is done to either a person or oneââ¬â¢s property. Crimes involving tort occur when negligence or intentional civil wrong is done and it does not arise out of a contract or statute. A tort is an act that injures a person mentally, physically, emotionally, or any other way. Acts of tort also include damage to ones property or reputation. Crimes of tort typically seek compensation which usually results in a dollar amount to cover the cost of the damage. Through the tort system, victims seek reimbursement for a wrongdoing done against them, holding the person legally responsible and hoping to prevent the wrong from again occurring. However, because compensation is involved in cases of tort, the system has begun to become more corrupt and the legal system is beginning to experience abuse. Victims are mistreating the legal system and seeking unreasonable reimbursements to cover their injuries. The people United ... ...e/161666/>. "Medical Liability Crisis Fact Sheet." All the World by William Shakespeare Essay
William Shakespeare has been considered the greatest poet of all times. Only school educated, this great poet acquired fame because he had an extraordinary power of observation which he tempered with his brilliant imagination that gave a creative boost to his art. He was also gifted with unique taste of music which helped him to compose beautiful songs and sonnets. His imagination and observation along with a keen ear towards tone and rhythm rendered a sonorous and lyrical quality to his verses- something which was missing in other poets of his times. Shakespeare wrote several comedies, tragedies and poems depicting his profound wisdom and psychological understanding of human nature. The poem ââ¬ËAll Worldââ¬â¢s a Stageââ¬â¢ is typical example of Shakespearean genius as he metaphorically compares the world to a stage where every human makes an entry like a stage actor, plays different roles and, when time declares, leaves the stage eventually. The poem is beautiful example of his vision of life. The first stage of life is infancy. The poet here describes a baby crying and throwing out in the motherââ¬â¢s arm calling for attention. In the second stage of life, the baby is now a school-going child who is unhappy and complaining as is unwilling to go to school but is forced to do so. The third stage in life is that of a lover. Young man in this age is full of deep sighs missing his beloved. He is preoccupied with her thoughts so much so that he sits writing long poems in praise of her beauty. The fourth stage in his life is that of a sincere and ambitious career-oriented professional. A this age he is competitive, jealous for opportunities, desires recognition even if it involves risk or great danger. Next comes the middle-aged man, well-fed, highly experienced and full of wisdom. He has great sayings ready for every occasion and a remedy for every problem. The sixth stage is that of a retired old man. He is thin and dressed comfortably, wearing specs and a small purse with him. He is wearing a hose of his youthful times which he has saved till now which helps him in walking. He is grouchy, complaining like a child carrying a pipe in mouth The last stage of life is when man has grown, weak, feeble and lacks strength and vitality. His life is at an end and he has nothing to look forward to. All he has before him is a memory of good old days. He sits reminiscing those times without teeth, eye-sight, taste and everything (hopes, desires, aspirations, etc), patiently waiting for his death.

Efficiency Is Doing Better What Is Already Being Done
Efficiency is doing better what is already being done. -Peter R. Drucker Climate change has become an evident issue in the world. As the facts evolve, it is truly apparent that the human footprint is drastically changing our climate and leading to the ultimate degradation of the planet. As the concepts of climate change develop, so do the strategies toward developing ââ¬Å"greenerâ⬠technologies. One of many ââ¬Å"greenâ⬠developments is sustainable building design. In this context sustainability ââ¬Å"refers to both a structure and the using of processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a buildingââ¬â¢s lifecycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolitionâ⬠(Wikipedia, n.d.). One key component of building sustainability is implementing energy efficiencies within the design and structural components of a building. The following text will examine energy saving sources as well as design processes for a more energy efficient structure. First, defining green building must be understood before determining what constitutes as green and what does not. Green buildingââ¬â¢s goals include minimizing environmental impacts of the costs incurred by living in a structure. Saving water, energy and reducing pollution are top rankers. Also, considerations of the consequences of building materials must be analyzed to determine if the energy saving is full circle; a product must not only save energy once installed but theShow MoreRelatedWhat Is Valuating The Unusual?993 Words à |à 4 Pagesat the table. Effective Communication Between Nurses And Nurses
This paper will examine effective communication between the doctor and nurse working together to provide high quality, safe care. Nurses use a wide range of effective communication strategies and interpersonal skills to appropriately establish, maintain, re-establish and terminate the nurse-client relationship (College of Nurses of Ontario [CNO], 2009). While nurses and physicians are key members of the health care team facilitate quality care, many studies show breakdown in nurse-physician communication remains concern. The Civil Rights Movement - 1286 Words
The Civil Rights movement is one of the most important acts to change the way not only African Americans were able to live their lives but all races and colors. It would slowly break down the social, economic, political, and racial barriers that were created by the The Age of Discovery and Transatlantic Slave trade. I believe without the Civil Rights acts our country would result to be no better than what it was when the Emancipation Proclamation just took effect. In the 1950s and long before, Southern folk, who were white had created a system that would interpret them as a superior race over blacks. The system would defend whites rights and privileges from being taken away from them while establishing terrible inhumane suffering for African Americans. In the South blacks were controlled in all aspects economic, political, and personal, this was called a ââ¬Å"tripartite system of dominationâ⬠- (Aldon D. I say this, because of the big buildings, lights, and the images of the black people in the collage. The city the painting seems like its trying to explain, looks like the city of Chicago to me. I say Chicago of many cities, because its known to have many black people struggling there and by the way the city looks with the big buildings. The painting could even be about the roaring 20s of African Americans or in other words the Harlem Renaissance. The roaring 20s is known for rural life and urban life, jazz, African American music, and even paintings. If you look close into the painting you could see some of those things. For example, the big buildings could represent the rural and urban life back then. When you look at this collage you can see the many different shapes, color, and texture of how this picture is put together. The shapes that are used in this painting seems to be positive because it catches your eye to make you be more focus on the shapes used. There are a lot of shapes used because there are a lot of boundaries which are separated from what surrounds the picture. As you look at the collage you can tell it has actual lines. For example it has horizontal, vertical, and even diagonal lines to actually bring the art work out. The colors used are mainly dark dull colors. There are not that many bright colors used besides light blue, thats used in the little caution light in the painting. As you look at the painting you notice it contains many visual tools. As you look at the lines in the collage you could see that some suggest motion. For example the rocket in the picture seems to look like its moving, because of the way the lines are formed. The buildings, the shape of the moon, and the collages of the people can be considered implied lines, because it forms geometric shapes. The mood of the painting is more of a calm and depressed scene. I say this because of the colors that are used in the painting. The color it mainly contains are dark brown, light brown, dark blue, black and some cool colors. The painting also contains a monochromatic color scheme used to make the sky. This is also another thing that could set the mood of the painting. Most monochromatic color scheme are used in paintings to set that certain mood. Another visual tool used in this painting is light. The direction of light can affect the way things can appear in a painting. The cut out images of the African American people and the buildings can be consider chiaroscuro, because the shading is from light to dark. The lighting of the picture makes the shape and color more visible. The design of the painting is sort of a simple design, because its a collage. As you look at the design of a painting, it could consists of the color, direction, point, and even size of the painting. The painting Rocket to the Moon contains all of these types of designs. .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d , .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d .postImageUrl , .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d , .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d:hover , .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d:visited , .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d:active { border:0!important; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d:active , .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc33f85caa60ec11a9e43df909d51e51d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Madonna Enthroned painting EssayThe buildings in this painting can be consider a rough texture because of the bricks used to build the building. As you look into the painting you can see the direction of how the collage is going. The painting is slanted towards the right a little. I say this, because as you look at the items in the picture its looks to be slanted. Direction in paintings can also give the paintings a mood. For example, the strong horizontal lines of the buildings give a feeling of stillness and calm. Another example, the diagonal lines of the rocket in the sky reinforce the feeling of movement. As you look and stare at most paintings you notice each one has a little meaning to it. Not only does it have a meaning, but most objects artists paints in a painting symbolizes a certain thing. In Rocket to the Moon it could mean plenty of things to different people. As I take time to look at the painting, different meanings comes to my head about this picture. The first thing I notice is that its a collage of African Americans in a city with a caution light on red. To me this painting means African Americans are struggling in a city with economic problems or is having some kind of problem in the city. This painting contains many objects that could symbolize a certain thing. The rocket in this painting can symbolize African Americans trying escape from there situation in the city. The pictures of the black people can symbolize everyday rituals of African Americans rural life in the south and urban life in the north cities. As I look at the painting I notice one of those people looks like Martin Luther King Jr. this could symbolize the dream of them escaping there problems in the city, because he always had dream things would be better. I chose Rocket to the Moon by Romare Bearden, because the collage of the painting caught my eyes. There is more focus on detail and color on the front portion of the painting rather than the back cityscape. Most paintings I have seen before are not like this one. Also I chose this one, because it really showed how African Americans are struggling in most cities. The colors in this painting really make you pay close attention to what is really going on. I like the way there are geometric shapes in this painting, because you can see the two-dimensions easier. Overall this is a great painting by Romare Bearden. You can tell he reflected his life in this painting of a collage of different things put together.

Law and Justice in Ancient Societies
In the ancient world, law and justice was used to maintain peace and harmony between people living in different societies. These laws were used to judge citizens of territories where ancient empires had acquired authority to administer as the dominant source of government.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Law and Justice in Ancient Societies specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Ancient laws and justice systems were influenced by religious doctrines, where the elite were given more protection compared to common citizens. In these societies laws were used to protect interests of the elite from any form of violation by people from lower classes. This paper will discuss how law and justice was applied in ancient societies by analyzing the Twelve Tables in Ancient Rome and The Laws of Hammurabi in Ancient Babylon. Twelve Tables The Twelve Tables in Ancient Rome served as the foundation of Roman law and was formed to govern how the Roman Republic was ruled. They were influenced by unwritten customary laws which were observed by Roman citizens in different parts of the empire. Before the formation of these laws, there were a lot of class struggles between aristocrats and working class citizens of the empire. In essence, the Twelve Tables were a set of rules that were used to govern Roman citizens by the empireââ¬â¢s rulers. The structure adopted for these laws was similar to ancient Greek laws even though they were written in Latin. They were publicly displayed for all Roman citizens to read and understand. They conferred different penalties depending on the nature of the offence committed, severity and the social status of the offender.Advertising Looking for essay on ancient history? They consisted of statutes that set norms and practices all citizens in the empire were required to observe. Significance of Each Table They are widely regarded as the foundation of modern law because they sought to address various legal and justice issues in ancient Rome. The first table enforced the supreme authority of the court. Any person summoned had to appear before the magistrate and if he failed, he would be brought to court by force. It also stipulated that an accused person court had a right to an advocate with a similar social status. Therefore, conflicting parties were required to present their issues in a trial, where a judge would administer a final ruling. The second table outlined penalties for various offences committed by Roman citizens. A free citizen found guilty of theft was flogged and ordered to repay stolen items to the owner while a slave found guilty of theft was sentenced to death by getting thrown off a cliff. The third table dealt with fraud and required th at a person accused of engaging in fraudulent acts pay double the amount he had taken to compensate the aggrieved party. This had to be repaid within thirty days, failure to which the guilty party was required to perform free hard labor for sixty days or become a slave.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Law and Justice in Ancient Societies specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The fourth table mandated that a father had the right to sell his own children as slaves. If a father sold a child more than three times, he was considered a free citizen who was no longer under his fatherââ¬â¢s authority. The law also stipulated that fathers had a right to kill their deformed children after birth. The fourth law demonstrates how fathers were given absolute powers over their families. The fifth table gave men the power of guardianship over females irrespective of their age. During marriage, a woman and her guardian had to agre e before any dowry payments were made. The law also recognized the legality of a will left by a deceased person and any division of possessions left by the deceased had to be done in accordance to his will. The sixth table required that a formal agreement between a seller and a buyer be recorded before any commercial land transaction was done. The agreement between parties involved was legally binding and they were all supposed to respect it. A woman was given rights of ownership over her husbandââ¬â¢s property if she had proof that they had stayed together for more than one year. This law also required men to show valid reasons that made them divorce their wives before their wishes could be granted. Table seven outlined property planning laws which all citizens were required to observe during construction of their buildings. The law mandated that a property owner had to build his building several feet apart from the next building taking into consideration roads that were used fo r passage.Advertising Looking for essay on ancient history? Table eight prohibited citizens from writing libelous statements and any person found guilty of writing these statements was sentenced to death by clubbing. A thief found guilty of stealing another personââ¬â¢s property at night was sentenced to death. The law also banned citizens from holding seditious meetings at night. The ninth table mandated that all statutes applied to all Roman citizens equally irrespective of their status. Judges who were found guilty of receiving bribes and other favors were condemned to death. The tenth table outlawed all funeral ceremonies within walls of the city. The law also valued the importance of oath taking by citizens because the act showed a strong sense of duty to the empire. Table eleven mandated that crucial laws in the empire could only be adopted after all citizens had app roved them through voting. This law also upheld that senators were not allowed to get married to common citizens. The twelfth table prohibited any form of sacred rituals being done in a property that had ownership disputes. The law also assigned responsibility to the owner of a slave who damaged the property of a fellow Roman citizen. The twelve tables were comprehensive because they addressed all legal and justice issues that were deemed important by Roman citizens. They were obtained from common customary law and touched on civil issues, public affairs, religious matters and property laws. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s Laws The Code of Hammurabi was used in ancient Babylon during Hammurabiââ¬â¢s reign as king from 1792 to 1750. Hammurabi was motivated to codify more than 280 laws which were used to govern the territory that was under his authority. These laws were borrowed from ancient Mesopotamian customs and they were used to maintain law and order in the area. Hammurabi had a vision of uniting all city-states that were under his domain and to achieve his goal, he used a set of laws to unify all people in different city states in the empire. The preamble to these laws outlines the importance of a just society that does not have wicked people to ensure the weak are adequately protected. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s laws were used to regulate different activities in Babylon and they made all citizens understand their legal obligations in the empire. Some of the laws contained in the code served brutal punishments to offenders. They were used to deter Hammurabiââ¬â¢s subjects from engaging in any acts that were either deemed immoral or illegal. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s laws conferred harsh sentences both to the elite and common folk, though slaves that broke the law received more severe penalties because they were considered inferior beings. For instance people who were found guilty of robbing fellow citizens were sentenced to death. The code also had a law that punished children who fought with their fathers. A child who was accused of beating up his father had his hands chopped off for disobedience. A slave who was found guilty of speaking disrespectfully to his master was punished by having one ear chopped off. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s laws were harsher compared to the twelve Roman laws. However, both sets of laws were heavily influenced by cultural customs and penalties administered were influenced by the social status of an offender. Hammurabi laws were vindictive and they were used to carry out vengeance against persons found guilty of various offences. Babylon and other ancient societies equaled the concept of vengeance with justice. Slaves were not given adequate protection and any person who was found sheltering a runaway slave was sentenced to death. Freemen were prohibited from encouraging slaves to disobey or escape from their ownersââ¬â¢ homes and any person found guilty of this crime was sentenced to death. The law also set clear responsibilities which property owners were supposed to adhere to during construction. The law also stipulated that a man who rents land from another man for farming bears all liabilities sustained by his crops before harvest. Therefore, the owner of the land is not required to compensate the tenant if his crops get destroyed by bad weather. The law also set clear issues that deal with marriage, womenââ¬â¢s rights and divorce. The code stipulated that men who abandoned their wives could not claim their rights as husbands after their wives had been courted by other men. It also mandated that a wife accused of being unfaithful or disrespectful to her husband will be made to go back to her fatherââ¬â¢s house. It also imposed stiff penalties on women that were openly found to be unfaithful to their husbands. They were sentenced to death by drowning. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s laws imposed stiff penalties depending on the status of the person accused of committing a particular crime. They were influenced greatly by religious beliefs in ancient Babylon. Conclusion In conclusion, the two sets of laws administered different forms of punishments to people who had been accused of violating them. The twelve tablets allowed accused persons the right to have an advocate during trial to enable them prove their innocence. Hammurabiââ¬â¢s laws were more vindictive and they were used to make ancient Babylonians submit to the authority of their king. Religion and traditional customary practices influenced the formation and application of these laws in the two ancient empires. Social Theories essays
Social Theories essays Sociology has been defined s the scientific study of human interaction and, as such, is accepted as a scientific activity (Leming 1997). Social science aims at discovering and explaining observed events of and in nature by means of a framework that can be tested. The goal of sociology is, therefore, to produce a body of knowledge that will provide a body of knowledge that will provide not only an understanding of the causal processes influencing human behavior but also enable sociologists to predict social behaviors (Leming). As a science, it pursues observable and provable regularities and explains these regularities by means of a set of observable and provable propositions or statements of relationship (Leming). The very effectiveness or success of sociology lies precisely in the explanatory and predictive power of this body of knowledge derived from The basic components or elements of a theory are a conceptual scheme, a set of propositions that states the relationships between variables, and a context for verification (Leming). The conceptual scheme consists of ideas that possess abstract properties not yet immediately verifiable by direct sensory observation. It also has a system of interrelated statements of relationships between variables, which seam the parts of the concept together. The conceptual scheme and the statements of relationships are joined together and organized under a paradigm (Leming). A paradigm is the basic image of a particular subject matter within a science and serves as context for the verification (Leming 1997). It defines what should be studied and asked, how the questions should be posed and the rules to observe in interpreting the answers that will be obtained. It is the broadest unit of consensus within a science, which subsumes, defines and inter-relates the examples and/or variables, theories, methods, and instruments within it (Leming)...
